CEREC® 1, the first dental chairside CAD/CAM
system, was introduced by Sirona Dental Systems
in 1985. At the time, the concept that a restoration
could be milled from ceramic, in-surgery and
fitted in one appointment was quite revolutionary.
As with any new concept, there were many
questions about the viability of such a radical
restorative technique. Fast-forward to 2012 and
28 Million CEREC® CAD/CAM restorations have
now been successfully placed with numerous long
term survival rate studies scientifically documented.
Each year CEREC® is gaining a greater degree of
acceptance as more and more practitioners
realise the advantages CEREC® CAD/CAM can
deliver to their practices and patients.
Other clinical advantages can include minimal
invasive dentistry as each restoration is completely
made to measure. One session dentistry can
prevent the recontamination of exposed Dentine by
avoiding temporaries and second appointments
which also allows the practitioner to deal with
clinical occurences on the day. CEREC® allows for
the manufacture of articulation led restorations
through the capture of the occlusion and bite.
Now through a series of software and hardware
upgrades, the CEREC® system has evolved to
become one of the most advanced CAD/CAM
ranges on the market, offering dental professionals
proven clinical advantages and their patients'
superior comfort levels throughout their treatment.
The latest addition to the CEREC® family is the
CEREC® AC unit with Omnicam, which introduces
continuous data acquisition to generate a full
colour 3D model of single restorations, quadrants
or full arches.
The quality of the digital impression has a direct
impact on the restorative outcome and the CEREC®
Omnicam continues the tradition for the highest
level of measurement precision. This precision
offers an extensive depth of field, enhanced detail
reproduction at the preparation margins, automatic
capture and shake-free images. The split screen
full colour 3D preview gives complete control over
the quality of the digital model, which helps
visualise diagnosis and the proposed treatment
plan for the patient.
As an alternative to Omnicam, the CEREC® Bluecam
offers easy operation, tried-and-tested Bluecam
technology and rapid image acquisition. With the
aid of the CEREC® Bluecam, a single tooth
restoration or larger areas can be scanned in just
a few seconds. This camera delivers outstanding
precision and efficiency, and is particularly suitable
for single-tooth restorations.
New Material Choices
The evolution of the software and hardware for
the CEREC® system is mirrored by developments
in the materials available for restorations.
All-ceramic restorations fabricated on Sirona's
CAD/CAM systems have proved themselves
countless times in clinical practice and now a
more extensive material selection is available
including; all-ceramic zirconium oxide crowns
and bridges, and custom implant abutments.

Making the Right Connections
An integral step in the success of chairside
CAD/CAM dentistry is the ability to record
an accurate digital impression of the preparation.
The accuracy of any software generated restoration
design program is dependent on the accuracy of
the data imported into it. With the introduction of
CEREC® Connect AC, the highly accurate digital
impression data acquired by dentists can be
transmitted via the Internet to a participating
dental laboratory, where it can be used to complete
any number of CAD/CAM generated restorations.
Non-precious metal constructions as well as
All-Ceramic restorations be manufactured in
CEREC® AC Connect with CEREC® Software 4.0
represents the latest advancement in chairside
digital systems. Working with CEREC® Connect
also means that there are no scan fees to consider,
which is an added advantage over and above
the fact that the requirement for impression
material is also eliminated.
CEREC® AC Connect provides digital impressions
of the highest precision for impeccable results.
As CEREC® Connect works on the CEREC® AC
platform, it offers the ability to upgrade an existing
digital impression unit to include connection to an
in-surgery milling unit. So when looking to offer
single-visit, single unit All-Ceramic chairside
CAD/CAM restorations, the CEREC® AC Connect
will be ready too.
On the other hand if a chairside CEREC® AC
system is being used, it is possible to connect to
a participating laboratory at any time and have
large bridges or non precious metal restorations
manufactured by the laboratory. CEREC® Connect

All the components of the CEREC® system fit
together perfectly - from the acquisition of the digital
impression to the milling of the final restoration.
In-practice milling can offer many advantages, not
least the completion of treatment in a single visit,
as well as positive feedback from patients.
The CEREC® MC XL milling unit offers an accuracy
of 25 m and high-speed milling combined with
optimum precision. Crowns can therefore be
completed in just 5 to 10 minutes. This one machine
caters for all indications (inlays, onlays, crowns,
veneers, temporary or permanent bridges) and
offers a choice of materials (feldspar/glass ceramics,
lithium disilicate, zirconium oxide).
Good working relationship
with the Laboratory
The CEREC® Connect software and the Sirona
Connect portal simplify collaboration between
the dental practice and the dental laboratory.
Once they have registered, the two parties
communicate directly via their respective software
packages. The data model is transmitted in just a
few minutes and gives the laboratory a detailed
insight into each case as it occurs.
